about

‘The Water Is Wide’ contains a mixture of lyrics from several English folk songs with the theme of new love gradually fading as time passes. The collector Cecil Sharp is credited with compiling what has become the ‘modern’ version in 1906; although some current versions by well-known artists still have different verses, the overall structure is pretty much as Lynn sings it here.

lyrics

The Water Is wide, I cannot cross over
And neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall go, my true love and I

There is a ship, and she sails the sea
She’s loaded deep, as deep can be
But not so deep as the love I’m in
I know not if I sink or swim

I leaned my back up against an oak
Thinking it was a mighty tree
But first it bent and then it broke
So did my love prove false to me

Oh. Love be handsome, and love be kind
Gay as a jewel, when first it is new
But love grows old, and waxes cold
And fades away, like the morning dew

The Water Is wide, I cannot cross over
And neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall go, my true love and I
