about

Originally a Scottish Border ballad, also known as ‘Raggle-Taggle Gypsy’ and ‘Black Jack Davy’, this familiar tale of bored wealthy ladies and the lure of rough trade is sung worldwide...

lyrics

Three Gypsies came to our hall door
They came so brave and boldly-o
And some sang high, and some sang low
And downstairs ran my lady-o

Then straight upstairs my lady went
Put on her suit of leather-o
There was a cry from the servants all
“She’s away with the raggle-taggle gypsies-o!”

And she’s kicked off her high-heeled shoes
All made of Spanish leather-o
Ran in the street with her bare feet
To follow the raggle-taggle gypsies-o

Late last night the Lord came home
Enquiring for his lady-o
The servants one and all replied
“She’s gone with the raggle-taggle gypsies-o!”

“Go saddle me my milk-white steed
The faster I might follow
And I will ride to seek my bride
Who’s gone with the raggle-taggle gypsies-o”

Now he rode East, and he rode West
He rode both North and South-ey-o
Until he came to an open plain
It was there that he spied his lady-o

“How could you leave your goose-feather bed
Your blankets strewn so comely-o?
And how could you leave your new wed Lord
All for a raggle-taggle gypsy-o?”

“What care I for my goose-feather bed
With blankets strewn so comely-o?
Tonight I’ll lie in an open field
In the arms of a raggle-taggle gypsy-o”

“How could you leave your house and land?
How could you leave your money-o?
And how could you leave your servants all
All for a raggle-taggle gypsy-o?”

“What care I for my house and land?
What care I for my money-o?
What care I for my servants all?
I’m away with the raggle-taggle gypsy-o”

“You rode East, when I rode West
And you rode high while I rode low
I’d rather kiss the gypsy’s lips
Than have your land and treasures-o”
